Australian Super 7s Round 4 2008 (Masters):
The Masters. An unusually cool 25 degrees Celsius the scene was set at Action
Paintball Games for the final and most anticipated round of the year,
Australias premier teams gearing up to do battle for the event, series titles,
trophies and the prestige of being Australias number 1 team. Hostile Intentions
a team of players from all around the country had their eyes on both the event
prizes and after an extremely consistent year were in top contention for the
series title and the prized Super 7s series gold rings.

A few not so local faces started to show up while teams were walking the fields,
Rob Astamendi from Derder and his trusty cameras, Alex Savino, Brandon Short
(Menace), Andy Kopcok (Raiderz), Tim Montressor(Philly AAs), Ryan
Moorhead(Philly AAS), Son Dabilis(Hurricanes) and the ever smiling Nicky T
playing with SWAT. With the talent of the local teams and the experience of
their guests it was going to be a fight all the way in the pro division. Friday
was to see the annual 10 man State of Origin (SOO) to be held on field one. This
is a round robin format with each state playing one game against the other and
top teams going directly into a final for bragging rights and their state name
on the shield. This year saw the addition of the South Australian state team
leaving one remaining state (Northern Territory) that allows paintball to
hopefully have a team next year. The winning state New South Wales put their
foot down from the start and showed the Australian Capital team that they were
hungry to have the trophy return home and werent going to slow down until they
got it. Once the SOO is finished the 10 man field is ripped down and the
replaced with the 7 man field. It was to be a fast field with plenty of
destruction from the snake. Teams walked the field till it was dark looking for
every vantage point.
6am Saturday gates open, registration, final chance to look at the field before
game 1 starts at 8.30. The refs were going to have a hard job of it this weekend
with some over night rain making conditions a little slippery and everyone
wanting to leave with one of the coveted Masters trophies.
PRO:
It was always going to be hard to pick a winner. All teams put everything they
had on the line pushing bodies and equipment to the limits. At the end of
Saturday the points were very tight with most teams still having a chance at
making the finals and having two games left to play on Sunday morning this would
be the breaker for who went to finals. Without a back corner for control and a
couple of small stand ups the snake was the place to go on a killing spree, with
Brandon, Tim, and AK, constantly getting multiple gs and helping push their
teams down the field. The bottom side of the field with its 2 big car wash
bumpers was another hunting ground that was giving way for some great gun
battles on the inside and allowing for some big moves down the tape line. With
the open preliminaries over it was time to count the points and find out who was
going on to finals and a shot at the event prizes. Hostile Intentions only
needing to make finals to wrap up the series for the year placed 3rd heading
into the semi-finals meaning they would take on heavy weights Menace to get a
spot in the final. Hostile not wanting to let the New Zealand based team and
their Americans into the final, came out of the box hard. Menace taking the
first game, showed Hostile they would have to bring their best if they wanted a
shot at the finals. Big Gav, D.Man and Neil unperturbed by the big names on
Menace came to the start gate ready to show what an Australian team can do. It
was a long hard fought game Hostile showing Menace why they were going to be
crowned 2008 series winners and taking control of the 2nd game. One last game
Menace taking the win going to the finals against the winner of the other
semi-final.
Semi Final 2 - Raiderz V SWAT:
Stable mates and friends off the field these two teams will throw each other
around with little regard on the field. Knowing that SWAT is not a team to
underestimate Raiderz left the start gate with force and looking to take the
first game and make their way through to the final. The second game was one of
the biggest wins of the weekend with SWAT coming back from a defensive position
of 5 on 2 then 4 on 1, with Son of the Hurricanes staying calm and bringing it
down to a 1 on 1 when a Raiderz player came running through, it made for a tough
call for the refs and it went the way of SWAT to give them the 2nd game. One
game left to make the finals what was to ensue was a battle of wits and skill,
both teams making calculated moves not wanting to give an inch to each other,
something had to give and SWAT broke through the defenses to take the win they
needed.
THE FINAL.
The battle for the title of Australian Masters. These two titans have been going
head to head for three years and there will be no love lost on the field. SWAT
sporting the talents of Tim Montressor, Ryan Moorehead, Son of the Hurricanes
and Nicky T with the already strong line up including Darryn Clegg 2006/2007
Australian player of the year and Mike Whybrew captain of SWAT and veteran of
Australian paintball, taking on Menace or lovingly referred to as Mynasty.
Without haste Menace line up ready to put it on SWAT and muscle in on their home
territory, Brandon down the snake Savino getting gs up the center and Bobby
Aviles (Aftermath) making sure of things behind Alex Savino ran smoothly.
Loosing a game doesnt sit well with anyone especially on home turf, repack,
regroup, some words of wisdom Get your head in the freakin game and back on
the field. SWAT a well experienced team knows how to put a game behind them and
put it together in the next, which is exactly what they did. Precise and
methodically is how SWAT did it for the second game, communication, team work
and experience led to Darryn shooting Brandon on his way into the snake and
smoking Aviles in the face while he tried to run down a fellow SWAT team mate.
Taking full advantage of position and the G count, SWAT in customary procedure
cleared the field quickly to make it one game a piece. The Master? Captain Mike
Whybrew, SWAT or Matt Storey, Menace. The tension in the pit area was high as
these two teams lined up once again to prove who had what it takes to win the
Australian Masters. The siren goes, all players make their bunkers and start
doing what they know is the job of the year, shoot the fool that hangs out that
bit to far, make the move into the next bunker or just hold that lane and wait.
The G counts start to happen, it starts to get tight, Menace with the upper hand
and then the push, Menace take the final game to once again win the Australian
Masters.
Semi Pro:
For the first time in the Super 7s the semi pro teams had a division to
themselves, previously the draw would have been such that either everyone played
everyone or split into two pools with all teams getting a chance to play against
the pro teams. Not this time, with enough teams to have their own pool. This
would mean playing on two different fields and having reasonable turnaround
time. It was going to be a tough field with teams travelling from all over
Australia to compete. Stand outs for the event were First & Only from Western
Australia (WA) and team Bitchin from Sydney putting together some very
consistent paintball all weekend. Playing on the two totally different fields
meant that teams were going to have to adjust and communicate well or their
world was going to fall apart in front of them, this would be the separator
between who made finals and who packed their bags and got to spend the rest of
Sunday doing some soul searching and wondering what they could have done
different. Bitchin had set a standard all year and werent about to let their
guard down especially with the home field advantage. Looking for promotion to
the pro division for 2009 Bitchin put the challenge out to anyone that cared to
take it. With the large amount of teams in the division it would mean that the
semi pro teams would play preliminaries 14 rounds then the top eight would play
quarter finals and the top four would then go through to play semis then the
finals.
Survival of the fittest:
The final of semi pro was to be Bitchin V First & Only, East V West. Bitchin had
already secured the semi pro series prize and were now looking for event glory.
After traveling 6000 kilometers First & Only werent going to just roll over and
hand it to them, instead throwing everything they had at them but it wasnt to
be as Captain Liz Whybrew of Bitchin led her team to event victory, series
honors and securing a place in the pro division for 2009.
Amateur:
Some may say that amateur teams are the noobs of Australian paintball, yes this
is where it begins but amateur in the sense of the word I dont think so. They
came fired up and ready to play. The SWAT Kidz after a very impressive year were
there to take no captives and after many hours of training with the likes of
SWAT.
Raiderz and Apocalypse were planning to put it on anyone taking the field
against them. The amateur teams played only on field two, running through their
draw twice getting a total of 12 prelim games. The rain affected surface being
chopped up also by the semi pro teams meant that it was going to be a tough
weekend with making big runs hampered by the slippery and slow conditions. The
preliminaries finished Sunday morning SWAT Kidz leading the way into the finals
this is what they had aimed for all year, it was their first season as a team
together and most of them hadnt picked up a marker before the start of the year
and now they were in the final of the Masters at their home field. With all of
their friends watching the Kidz had their own East Vs West engagement. As
planned and predicted the Kidz made short work of their opponents giving them
reason to celebrate as they also won the series and proved that they would be a
force to be reckoned with in semi pro for 2009.

Not only does winning come with good feelings and trophies but often comes with
a whole swag of prizes including cash, Menace the winners of the pro division
taking home $7,000, Bitchin taking home $4,000 and that swag of prizes donated
by some of the series sponsors for winning the series. The series sponsors
include Action Paintball, Paintball Assassins, Killer Paintballs, Planet
Eclipse, Paintballshop.com and many others. It is easy to see why these
companies take pride in supporting the Australian Super 7s, the entire event on
and off the field is run in a very professional manner, from the dedicated
referees who stand out there taking it on the chin all day to the ever happy and
supportive staff.

"The game was against Menace (Mynasty) in the
prelims to the finals, this particular game we had to win, to win the 2008 Super
Sevens series, loose and we came second to SWAT.
The pressure was on for all of us, the whole series hung in the balance, on
this one game. The game plan changed and the guys wanted me to run the fifty of
the break and stay posted on the snake to my left and make sure Brandon short
didnt hit the snake (he was ripping teams apart from there and we couldnt
afford this to happen).
I stayed posted for what seem like for ever but no Brandon he had been going
there almost straight away in almost all of there games, they didnt no I was
there so Menace changed their game too, I had a quick look back at something and
in that split second he moved I took a few shots and missed,'F**K'. I stayed
cool and let the team know what had happened. Brandon was shooting 1 ball at a
time at the side of my bunker hoping that I would look into it (he must of
thought I was a noob or just fishing for something).
Whilst I was standing there to my right of my bunker was the Car Wash at the
fifty, I hear faintly from our back line "Dman, CAR WASH" without blinking an
eye I switched hands looked right and shot 5-8 shots straight into the face of
one Alex Savino, without hesitation I switched back to my left to get back onto
Brandon and as I did he had already moved down the snake 'F**K' just as I
thought how do I fix this problem not only did I miss out on shooting him on the
way in he has now moved down the snake even further. Brandon stuck his head up
for a look bummer for him 2 shots straight in his face. I took a couple of
breaths went to my right of the centre fifty for a look by now longy had bumped
into there car wash just as he did back right corner shot him which left me an
opportunity to shoot him out and so thats what I did, unknown to me all that
was left of my team longy and myself, now just me. Staying focused I evaluated
the situation, I had back centre and a Doritio (I think to my left) with a guy
in it, I pushed forward on the Dorito guy, we shot at each other he missed so I
got up and started to run down the back centre, as I got to the bunker he ran
around it out of the way of my run though F**K I stopped dead in my tracks
aimed my gun to the edge of the bunker he was about to come from and gave him
some LOVE, got him cold. I grabbed the flag and started to head back for the
hang and looking at the dead box if you can imagine 3 heads poking out the left
side and 3 heads poking out the right side of the dead box, I thought to myself
self well I have brought the goods to this game for the team, I hung the flag
and the guys in the box jumped for joy for the win and the series and to top it
off they pointed out to the timer with 8 seconds left. This was the highlight of
the event for me."

The future:
The dust has settled and another year has come to pass. There have been some big
changes to what is going to happen in 2009.
Firstly there will only be three rounds of the Super 7s with the promoter
having to make the hard decision and dropping what would be the first round.
Round 1 - Action Paintball Sydney - May 16th and 17th 2009 Round 2 - Action
Paintball Perth - August 1st and 2nd 2009 Round 3 - Action Paintball Sydney -
November 28th and 29th
